HOW IT BEGAN

Today the Warehouse Project is known as a registered non-profit, implementing beneficiary-focused projects across the island, but back in 2010 it was simply a dream, conceptualized by Kirby and Fiona de Lanerolle as a community empowerment initiative that they hoped would better the lives of the community living in and around the Tripoli Market area in Maradana, Sri Lanka.

With the provision of various initiatives including after-school tuition, free meals, English classes, health clinics, dance and drama workshops, computer skills courses, and job placements, within a short period of time the community was changing in positive ways and at a faster pace than anyone planned for. Over 1400 households in the area were impacted.

The core objective of the project as it was first conceptualized was to inspire responsible citizenship and create awareness about the urban community needs in Colombo and beyond. 13 years later, the work continues still, but the initial project is now 1 of countless more, that are changing the social landscape across Sri Lanka, empowering individuals and communities toward better lives and futures.

The initial project now goes by the name of 'The Tripoli Market Initiative' and runs sustainably with a new wave of communities being impacted each year.
